The City Museum Vukovar was established in 1946, and its first permanent exhibition opened in 1948. The City Museum Vukovar actively participates in two projects as part of the unique project of the Croatian Government, titled "Restoration and Revitalization of Cultural Heritage Ilok-Vukovar-Vučedol," conducted by the Ministry of Culture of Croatia. These projects include the construction of the Archaeological Park and the Museum of Vučedol Culture in Vučedol and the opening of the permanent exhibition of the City Museum Vukovar in the renovated Eltz Castle.

Five kilometers southeast of Vukovar is the Ovčara farm, remembered in contemporary Croatian history as the site of the largest crime in the Homeland War. The hangar, which once served as a storage facility for agricultural machinery, was turned into a camp for non-Serbian residents of the city and its surroundings in September 1991. Today, the Ovčara Memorial Center stands at the site of the hangar, preserving the memory of the wounded and civilians taken from the Vukovar hospital, imprisoned and tortured in the former hangar, and then executed and buried.

Built as a replacement for the previous water tower in the city center, which was not sufficient for the growing needs of the expanding city. It stands 50 meters tall. During the Battle of Vukovar in 1991, the water tower was severely damaged by Serbian forces, enduring around 640 enemy projectiles, becoming a symbol of the city's suffering and resistance.
